why was algebra invented

I'm getting really tired in my math class. It's why was algebra invented, but we're covering higher grade material. The concepts are really complex and that’s why I usually sleep in the class. I like the subject and don’t want to drop it, but I have a real problem understanding it. Can someone guide me?
